MOST OUTSTANDING CULTURAL EVENT NOMINEE: LASO – LUNAR NEW YEAR

Describe the cultural program and how it meets the mission and goals of the organization. Details MUST include: Date of event, number of participants, program purpose (i.e. goals and objectives), member involvement, use of resources, and marketing techniques.

The Lunar New Year Good Luck Wall was a tabling event that took place in the Danna Student Center on Loyola University campus on February 26, 2019 from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. The purpose of this event was to teach and invite Loyola about an important holiday in Eastern Asian culture. As students walk to classes or get lunch, they could take a minute to celebrate Lunar New Year by writing down their wish or goal for the year. To those who had free time, they could read more about Lunar New Year on the posters we made. There were around 25 participants who hung their wishes or goals on the tree painting. LASO members also volunteered by painting the tree, cutting out flowers from construction paper, and inviting their friends to the event. Resources used came from LASO treasury, SGA, and Tulane University Vietnamese Association. To market the event, we painted a window in the Danna Student Center and made an event page and posts on Facebook and Instagram. The event was also talked about during our general meetings and emails.

How did this cultural program serve the campus and/or community?

The Lunar New Year Good Luck Wall spreads awareness to various Asian celebrations by putting up posters that contain facts about Lunar New Year, such as the participating countries and zodiac signs. To invite the Loyola community to celebrate with us, we ask them to write their goals or wishes for the new year and hang it onto a tree painting.

Did the organization overcome any challenges that arose while planning and implementing the cultural program/event? How?

One of our biggest challenges was figuring out how to be inclusive of all of the countries that celebrate Lunar New Year. Each executive board member did research to set a balance of how much information from each culture should be included. For example, the zodiac signs are a bit different for each culture. We decided to include all of the zodiacs on the poster and labeled which countries followed that zodiac.
