Please describe the purpose of this dance, including your intention, goals, and creative process.

This dance was performed for Date Auction 2018 (Time Travel). Our sub-theme was 70’s Disco. To supplement the overarching theme, we decided to incorporate both classic hits from the 70’s and relevant hip-hop songs from today. Because it can sometimes be confusing to differentiate between different eras of music, we chose standard songs such as the Bee Gee’s ‘Staying Alive’ and Wild Cherry’s ‘Play That Funky Music White Boy.’ These songs have that distinctive funky 70’s vibe to them, which allowed us to standout from the other performances. These songs also allowed us to recreate popular dance moves from that time, such as the disco and soul train.

We opted not to use solely 70’s music because we wanted the performance to be enjoyable for both the dancers and the audience, and to stick with the theme. This is where the hip-hop comes in. We used hip-hop music as a transition through time. We shifted from past to present frequently to balance out our performance. We did not want either era to outweigh the other. Our choreographers knew the capabilities of our dancers but wanted to be ambitious, so they decided to incorporate a tutting section into the performance to be our major “”wow”” factor.
