I am nominating USMVSA for the GCA ‘Most Outstanding Philanthropic Event’ award for their annual Eggroll Fest. Twice a year USMVSA holds their annual Eggroll Fest, where they hand rolled eggrolls and sell them to the USM community to raise money for UNAVSA’s CPP. This event is one of the most anticipated events USMVSA holds, everyone from the Hattiesburg and USM community looks forward to eggroll fest day where they can purchase fresh hand rolled eggrolls. USMVSA spends their year planning for this event, perfecting the eggroll recipe, coming up with new ways to promote their eggrolls and building relationships with their community. This past year they rolled a total of 2,600 eggrolls and donated proceeds to Children of Vietnam. USMVSA has continue to put their all into this event to make it the most successful as possible in order to donate to a great CPP each year and they will continue to strive to improve it in order to continue their legacy of Eggroll Fest.

What efforts were used to motivate and involve the organization’s members?

We have a set goal for each member to sell at least 10 eggrolls, at the end the member who raised the most amount of eggrolls wins a prize. The prizes varies from free past VSA t-shirts to asian snacks.

How did the organization overcome any challenges that arose while planning and implementing the event?

Each year some challenges we have overcome is how to roll the egg rolls, getting rid of a sour/dry taste to the egg rolls and member participation in helping to roll the egg rolls. This year we set an easy way to roll the egg rolls by simply demonstrating the members a different way to roll the egg rolls rather than the traditional method. Getting rid of the sour/dry taste we now instead of salting and squeezing the juice out of the carrots, we just cut them and add them straight to the mix of meat/ or veggies. We also now went back to frying the egg rolls the day of instead of beforehand and putting them in the oven to reheat. Participation of members still is a struggle when planning the event/ hosting the event, we have plenty of participation the day of when it comes to selling the egg rolls but prepping has always been a challenge. We try to provide free lunch for those who come and help roll, along with at the end of the day giving them a nice little shout out and thanking them for their help.
