MSUVSA’s Annual Membership Retreat is typically the event that “”makes-or-breaks VSA”” for most members. It is first introduced at our Fall Interest Meeting to encourage both new and old members to come together to bond and build a closer relationship with one another. The ultimate goal for this event is for everyone to have a fun relaxed time, while maintaining an open mind about VSA. We utilize this event to showcase every aspect of MSUVSA. From team-building activities to a concluding kick-back, we try to show that MSUVSA has opportunities for leadership and creating a strong social network.

MSUVSA’s Annual Membership Retreat is an event for the members. As an eboard we try our best to create the most enjoyable event with a reasonable budget. In order to hold our retreat, the biggest obstacle is securing a venue or location (typically the most expensive thing to budget). We have been privileged that one of our alumni has been generous enough to continually offer their family summer home in Brandon, MS for us to host the event. This allows us to budget roughly $150-200 for the entirety of the event. The bulk of that budget is focused on food for the weekend. To demonstrate a bit of culture and allow the members to bond, we revert to tradition and provide a large family-styled meal such as a hot pot or spring rolls.

What efforts were used to motivate and involve the organization’s members?

Because this is the first major event of the year, it is often hard for an eboard to initially gauge how general members will react to certain events. To combat this, we rely on the testimonies from older or returning members to encourage new faces to attend the retreat.

Did the organization overcome any challenges that arose while planning and implementing the event? How?

This year, the challenge that we had to over was accounting for such an increase in interested members wanting to attend the retreat. As an eboard, we did not expect to see so many eager faces willing to attend. To overcome this obstacle, we increased our budget slightly to ensure that we had enough food to feed everyone.
