Ole VASA’s annual formal was a Crazy Rich Asians themed this year. We host this event for our general members, but allow anyone to come. This formal was hosted on October 2nd with around 120 people in attendance. We had many of our general members, Ole Miss people, and many VSA members from other schools in attendance. Our annual Fall Formal gives our members a chance to dress up, escape the reality of school, and brings together VSA members from other schools.

What efforts were used to motivate and involve the organization’s members?

We shared many graphics on social media and even did a giveaway on Facebook out of everyone that shared to or tagged their friends on our promo post. Members who reserved tickets got a discounted price compared to the price at the door.

Did the organization overcome any challenges that arose while planning and implementing the event? How?

We overcame the venue restrictions and regulations by becoming more creative with our decorations. Our social chair and several of our eboard in particular worked very hard to create the Crazy Rich Asians glamour and evoke the luxurious vibes that we loved from the movie. We had to find a venue and food, make a budget, determine decorations and backdrops, find a DJ, and provide housing for members from other schools within a month. We wanted to recreate the wedding scene from the movie, but we did not know how we were going to pull it off. Where would we get the water? What would hold the water? How do we replicate this scene with all of the emotions that were displayed in the movie?

Additional Comments (Optional)

We recreated the water wedding scene with a small pond area that Eric Pham crafted by hand out of tarp, flowers, lights, and PVC pipes. It was beautiful and tears were shed.
