VSA-LSU’s Date Auction Dance was a piece that was based loosely off of the themes of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Although the show contains battles among the nations, the dance was created to symbolize a sense of unity among the four nations: Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. Each of the elements was separated into a section of the dance. Participants were allowed to pick between water, fire, and air nations. These nations were pieces choreographed by Lilly Cao (Air), Justin Nguyen (Water), and Michael Sullivan (Fire). The Earth Nation was an original step routine choreographed by Alyson Vu and Paige Sellers, and dance participants from the other three nations had the option of participating in this section.

The beginning and closing dances contained participants from all four of the nations. To distinguish which nation the dancers originated, colored bandanas were worn by the respective nations. Water wore blue, Earth wore green, Air wore white, and Fire wore red. All black clothing and white shoes were worn to enhance the dancers’ bandanas. Because all four nations were present on stage, this served a purpose of creating a sense of harmony between Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. The choreography of each nation was based off the theme of the nation. For example, the Water dance, choreographed by Justin Nguyen, included fluid-like movements that were performed to Trey Songz’s “Dive In.” Alyson and Paige’s Earth choreography required heavy footwork balanced by arm movements that mimicked earth-bending. Michael Sullivan created a Fire choreography that was fueled by emotion. The choreography was performed to “do re mi” by blackbear. Finally, Air, choreographed by Lilly Cao, was performed to “Bodak Yellow” by Cardi B, and it was a piece that involved fast, hard hitting movements and floor work, a style that envelops the Air Nation. The closer was performed to Post Malone’s “Rockstar” and incorporated all four nations, again, to emphasize the idea of unity.
