Please explain the idea behind this design and how it was executed. How successful does this design get its message across?
“I usually get a lot of different recommendations in my YouTube feed for various photoshop or illustrator design tricks. I’ve had previous experience with animations, so I found Game Night to be a great opportunity to try new tricks as part of an animation. I believe this design worked out fairly well for several reasons. First, we took into account our color scheme on our social media. Each post has to be a certain color so that all designs form a pattern. This post was to have a navy background, so that represented the ‘night’ aspect of game night. Secondly, I wanted to make an animation. The Nintendo Switch’s controller docking feature was perfect to serve as an animation; I just had to make the Switch itself have Xulava colors. Lastly, the motifs of the animation had great synergy, making the whole thing pleasing to the eye. Having the ‘neon lights’ light up once the controllers were docked gave the Switch its completed shape in addition to conveying the metaphor that the Switch itself is a sign. Just like how typical neon signs are used to signify if a place is open or not, the neon aspect of the graphic signifies that XULAVA has a Game Night. The color of the neon lights was intentional, too. The Switch controllers were XULAVA’s simple comfort colors to represent a casual experience for attendees, while the bright neon colors represented a high-energy atmosphere as well. Those who attend the event will be able to enjoy themselves no matter if they are casual fun people or high-octane people. Overall, the graphic represents the greatest unity of new and old experiences I’ve been able to accomplish as part of Xulava. As a designer, it’s one of the few rare designs that matched what I imagined wholly.” - Danton Vu
